An introductory word from the Dean
Dear colleagues,
The first half of the semester, which is now almost over, offered plenty of sunny days that we were able to make use of for a range of great events which allowed us once again to have personal meetings, something we really missed during the COVID pandemic. We started the academic year at the Kotlářská campus, where we baptised the long-awaited book ‘History written by scientists (Dějiny psané přírodovědci)’, and even planted a tree. On Bohunice Campus, we were once again able to hold a barbecue with the Deans.
More recently, we managed to launch the prestigious MUNI Mendel Doctorandus Award Programme, celebrate the 99th birthday of our Emeritus Professor of Physics and Rector of the University of Silesia in Opava, Martin Černohorský, and arouse interest in science among potential students and wide public at the Festival of Science, the Researchers’ Night and the Open Day. At the same time, we also managed to teach and learn and devoted ourselves to science.

Faculty of Science attracted 3031 visitors to the Night of Scientists
On Friday, September 30, 2022, after a two-year online period, the Night of Scientists was once again held "live". At the Faculty of Science of MU, both campuses, the centre on Kotlářská Street and the Bohunice University Campus, came alive with science from 6 pm to midnight. The event involved over 300 performers from the ranks of scientists, researchers, teachers and students. They prepared a total of 55 stations, where they presented "science with all their hands", as was the theme of this year's edition of this regularly well-attended and popular event popularising science.

Interview
According to Zdeněk Bochníček, the Vice-Dean for Teacher Programs at the Faculty of Science, the prestige of the teaching profession will improve when there will be a preponderance of teachers who are fondly remembered by students and pupils throughout their lives. Vice-Dean Bochníček, who teaches physics for students in physics and non-physics programs, is one of them. He has already won the university prize for outstanding teachers twice, as well as the Minister of Education’s prize. We asked Zdeněk what challenges teacher programs face?

Science and Research
Apparently, there are many places on Earth that have plant species diversity similar to that of the Amazon rainforest. This surprising finding was revealed by an international team of researchers who used artificial intelligence to analyse a dataset of approximately 170,000 vegetation samples from all climate zones and determined how estimates of plant diversity changed as the sampling area varied from a few square metres to hectares. The researchers have created a new global map of plant diversity based on surveys of small areas (10–1000 m2).

Mendel 200
G. J. Mendel and his low resistance to stress
Several times in Mendel’s life, his low resistance to stress became apparent. According to documents, he struggled with certain mental problems from a young age during his high school studies. He writes in his biography that he got into a deplorable position when he had to take care of himself on his own, but that he managed to earn at least enough by private tuition that he could “live in misery”. For him, this hardship was both a physical burden and a mental strain, and it caused him to become seriously ill on Pentecost while in the 5th grade. His father took him home to recover, and Mendel did not return to school until after the holidays.

On 14 September 2022, the Bohunice Campus became the host of the inter-faculty PhD day. The event was designed as an information session for new PhD students, providing them with the necessary information regarding doctoral studies, interdisciplinary training opportunities, student competitions, and presentations of popular mobility programmes. Existing Master's students already considering PhD studies were also invited, and the PhD day gave them insight into the demands that this study will require.
