The project is based on a study on mechanism of pyrite biodegradation under catalysis of pyrite-oxidizing bacteria, in relation to pyrite waste biodegradation resulting in sulfuric acid formation. Environmental acidification and metal migration are invol ved in those processes. Relation of iron and sulfur metabolism of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans to pyrite biooxidation and stacionary state during pyrite oxidation by Fe(III) will be studied. The objective of those studies is a more detailed specification of current knowledge on an indirect mechanism of bacterial pyrite oxidation. The pyrite waste at Zlaté Hory, the surface of which was recultivated, will be a subject of testing the effect of recultivation on the occurrence of active bacteria which could ta ke part in environmental acidification. Bacterial sulfur metabolism is connected with biodegradation of pyritic materials due to conditions leading to formation of sulfur substances which may be biooxidized to sulfuric acid.
