In contrast to the CNS environment, the peripheral nerves of mammals provide cellular and extracellular conditions supporting the regeneration of axons. The supporting conditions originate distal to the point of injury during Wallerian degeneration that results in formation of immature Schwann cells. The cells restore the production of molecules which promote axonal regrowth. The synthesis of axon-promoting molecules by Schwann cells and suitable content of their extracellular matrix are important extri nsic factors influencing the axon regeneration in the peripheral nervous systém. Some recent reports suggest that the cellular and extracellular environment is probably not the same for regeneration of motor and somatosensory axons in the peripheral ner ves. In addition, formation of different extrinsic cues supporting the axonal regeneration of the motor and somatosensory axons in the damaged peripheral nerves as well as the ventral and dorsal spinal roots of the rats.
